Had the government waited only until the brutal assassination of Hakim Muhammad Said and similarly savage attacks on other eminent and innocent citizens to launch a so-called "crackdown" on terrorists? he asked. The implication is that the government was already aware of the identity of the terrorists; otherwise, remarked Javed Jabber, if the government did not know, the crackdown could only target innocent people. There are also reports in the press that more police will be recruited to strengthen the Karachi Police Force. This is yet another futile attempt to deal with the problem of law and order, said Jabbar. It is the structure and pattern of accountability of the Police that has to be radically improved, and mere addition in number will not make a major difference, he added. The people of Karachi, like those elsewhere in Pakistan, were hardly going to be fooled by the coming 'crackdown', he affirmed. On the day of the soyem of the late distinguished Hakim Muhammad Said, and the other citizens who also lost their lives on October 17, said Jabbar, the Millat Party reiterated its strong condemnation of the callous and barbaric act perpetrated in the very city in which Rangers and police forces have been deployed for several years. The President of the Party, Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari has already expressed the great sense of shock and outrage on behalf of the party over the assassination, and has called for the resignation of the Muslim League government. ---------------------------------- Muttahida-Nisar meeting unlikely today KARACHI: It is expected that a crucial meeting, scheduled to be held on Tuesday between Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Federal Minister for Provincial Coordination, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, will not be held. In another development, Muttahida Parliamentary Party Leader Dr Farooq Sattar, following the situation that has developed after the murder of Hakim Muhammad Said has rushed to London where he will apprise the party chief about the latest developments. Sources said he decided to leave for London after discussing the prevailing city situation with party leaders. Political observers are attaching importance to Dr Farooq Sattar's departure to London. Amid reports that the two held secret meeting later, a Los Angeles-based weekly Pakistan Link claimed on Monday that Sita's surprise appearance in the gala shocked the organisers and put Imran Khan in a very awkward situation. According to the weekly, the security personnel escorted Sita outside the hall. Clad in a black suit and a tiger-print scarf, Sita was snatched away immediately after her arrival at the event by one of Imran's cousins, Dr Nausherwan Burki, and the local organisers of the event. They kept her busy for a while and later took her to Imran Khan, who was standing in another corner of the room with some guests. As she approached closer, Pakistan Link's photographer tried to take pictures of the rare meeting, but a self-proclaimed local spokesman of Imran forcibly stopped the photographer from doing so. "Imran Khan also yelled at the photographer, saying why he was doing it," the weekly said. Several prominent community members condemned the incident as undemocratic and against the spirit of freedom of the press. During the incident, the room was full with other media men, including a photographer from the prestigious Los Angeles Time. Later, Sita White was escorted out of the hall by security personnel on the instructions of the local organisers. She had bought the $100 ticket to the event, which was refunded. According to organisers, Sita White, while inside the hall, started screaming and created a scene. "At this point it was necessary for us to throw her out," an organiser told the Link. Sita White, giving her version of the incident, told Pakistan Link that she was only trying to have a seat closer to Imran Khan as she wanted her daughter to see her father from a close range. After Sita's departure, the program progressed smoothly until after midnight. ----------------------------------
