The Gulzar-e-Hijri police found mutilated remains of an unknown victim lying on Super Highway near Burraq petrol pump. Police were of the opinion that the victim was murdered somewhere else and the killers threw the body on the highway, which was turned into pieces by passing vehicles. Aslam Pervez, who was injured in firing on Friday, died in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The deceased, hailing from the NWFP, was standing near Nazimabad No 2 bus stop when accused Malik Shah, Ghalib Shah and their accomplices opened fire injuring him seriously. Police said the incident took place due to enmity.

Jaish-e-Muhammad activist, son gunned down

KARACHI: Unknown assailants gunned down an activist of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JM) and his son outside their house on Saturday.

Maulana Abdul Majeed a middle-aged activist of the militant group fighting in Held Kashmir, and his 11-year-old son Anas, a Hafiz-e-Qur'aan, were shot dead in North Nazimabad, Block G. The police, quoting eyewitnesses, said two people on a motorbike targeted them as they were getting out of their car outside their house.

The bullets pierced into their heads. Witnesses and passers-by transported them to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Family members and the JM leaders reached the hospital on information. A source told The News that army officials also reached the hospital.

They were later shifted to the JPMC where the father breathed his last while being treated and the son also died after a few minutes. "The father had sustained two bullets while the son died of a single shot in the head," said a senior JPMC doctor

The DIG Tariq Jamil was unaware about the incident when The News contacted him while the SSP Central, Syed Shaukat Ali Shah, said: "I have received information that Majeed was affiliated with Harkat-ul-Ansar. They were attacked by two riders of a motorbike."

The JM came into light after an Indian aircraft, carrying 200 passengers, was hijacked from New Delhi and landed in Afghanistan. The hijackers had demanded of the Vajpayee government to release JM leader Maulana Masood Azhar and following his release the hijackers let go all the passengers.

The city is already disturbed after the violence following Sunni Tehrik (ST) leader Salim Qadri's assassination on May 18. The ST leaders had blamed the JM and Sipah-e-Sahaba (SSP) for the killing of Salim Qadri. The SSP, however, denied the charges and alleged that its activist Arshad, found dead along with Salim Qadri and others, was kidnapped and killed. When contacted by The News, a JM leader Qari Mehmood, said: "Maulana Abdul Majeed was a district activist and was returning home from his shop in Paposh Nagar."

Sajjad terms LB polls 'unconstitutional'
SIALKOT, June 2: Terming the local polls unconstitutional, former Supreme Court chief justice Syed Sajjad Ali Shah says the military government plan will weaken the federation.

"The power to hold the local polls is the responsibility of the provinces," he told a meeting of the Sialkot district bar association here on Saturday. He said the government had miserably failed in the accountability of the corrupt. Even the accused who attacked the Supreme Court had not been awarded exemplary punishment, he said.

He demanded a probe into the wrong doings committed by those in the judiciary who, according to him, had disgraced the country's prestigious institution by accepting several incentives from previous governments. "It is high time to purge the judiciary of corrupt elements for the restoration of public confidence in courts and the supremacy of the law", he said. The government should form a joint national council under the supervision of judiciary for the corruption-free society in the country, he suggested.
