MQM urges steps to check women suicide bombers
KARACHI, July 2: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, a major stake-holder in the ruling coalition, has asked the government to take serious notice of the reports that Jihadi outfits have planned to use women in suicide attacks. The MQM also claimed that strike in the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) was called at the behest of the Jamat Islami. The part also demanded removal of the MMA government in the NWFP for the deplorable treatment meted out to a girl in Nowshera. In a statement, the MQM's Coordination Committee referred to the reported statement of Gul Hassan, the alleged activist of a Jihadi outfit, arrested recently, who had disclosed that there were plans of suicide attacks on Imambargah and other religious places, involving women activists of Jihadi groups in the country. The MQM maintained that the disclosure had established that there was a plan to pit people of different religious belief against each other to destroy peace of the city. Deploring such a plan, Muttahida accused the so-called religious organizations of misleading innocent people for achieving their ulterior objectives. The committee members also appealed to Gen Pervez Musharraf, Sindh governor and the chief minister to take appropriate security measures for foiling attempts pertaining to another terrorist attack on imambargahs, mosques and other religious places. In a statement issued from the party headquarter, Nine zero, the MQM MNAs accused the JI of endangering life of a large number of heart patients by calling doctor's strike to protest against disappearance of Dr Akmal Waheed and Dr Arshad Waheed. They claimed that the two doctors had been taken into custody by the security agencies in the light of a confessional statement by Mujeebur Rahman, who was arrested in connection with the attack on Karachi corps commander's convoy. The MNA's claimed that both the doctors were members of the JI and Dr Akmal had remained an office-bearer of the Islami Jamiat Tulba in Sindh Medical College. They claimed that the doctors were nephews of Dr Mairajulhuda Siddiqui, president of the JI's Karachi chapter, and relatives of Senator Prof Ghafoor Ahmad, claiming that the two doctors had travelled to Afghanistan to assist Taliban. The MNAs, lashing out at the religious parties, claimed that the confessional statement was indicative of an alleged conspiracy being hatched by the JI against the integrity of the country.

PESHAWAR: Official faces action for defying leader
PESHAWAR, July 2: The NWFP health department has sought removal of the medical faculty secretary who refused to carry out an allegedly irregular order of a Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leader, sources said. An official said the department had moved a summary to the chief minister seeking immediate transfer of the secretary, Syed Nazar Hussain Shah. "The transfer orders are expected in a few days," the official said. The cause of the move, the sources said, was the refusal of the secretary to concede to demands an MMA leader. The medical faculty is the examining body for paramedical disciplines. According the sources, the secretary had cancelled the certificates of paramedics awarded without fulfilling the criteria before 1997. They said he also refused to pass the failed students of a paramedical institute owned by an MMA leader. In the last examination, all the 175 students of the institute failed, which infuriated its influential owner, who holds an important post in the district government. The leader reportedly tried to influence the secretary to get his students passed, but in vain. Provincial Health Secretary Dr Ihsanul Haq constituted acommittee comprising senior professors of the Khyber Medical College to re-evaluate the papers of the failed students of the institute. A procession of the students who had failed was organized to press the demand for the secretary's removal. "The committee found that the results declared by the medical faculty were based on merit and all the students who had failed were asked to re-appear in the examination," the sources said. However, the MMA leader who kept exerting pressure on the medical faculty secretary. "The health minister called the secretary to his office and asked him to explain the situation before the owner of the institute," the sources said. They said the secretary refused to allow anything against merit. The secretary was pressured to change some examiners of the medical faculty, which he refused, the sources said and added that he also refused to pass a person on the health minister's directives. Health Minister Inayatullah denied all the allegations and said he had never asked the secretary for any illegal work. He said the secretary had failed all the students of the private institute, following which he formed a committee to look into the matter. The committee, he said, had later cleared many students.

Pakistani hostage in Iraq released
ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani driver held hostage by insurgents in Iraq has been released by his captors, his family said on Friday, adding that family members in Pakistan had spoken to the man by phone. "Amjad Hafeez telephoned us from Iraq on Friday and told us that he has been released unharmed," his uncle Abdul Razzaq told AFP, speaking by telephone from Rawalpindi. Hafeez spoke briefly to his mother, who had made an impassioned plea on Monday for the release of her son. "We were in a state of torture since he was kidnapped. But now we all are overjoyed," he said and added "His mother is crying. She is so happy and has been saying that the doors of heaven have opened on her." Hafeez’s mother told AFP late on Friday: "I spoke to my son and I am very, very happy that he is free. I don’t have words to describe my feelings. I am grateful to Allah." Razzaq said: "The prayers of the fellow Muslims and the efforts by the government have borne fruit and we all are extremely happy." Hafeez, 26, who had been working as a driver for a US company ferrying food from Kuwait to neighbouring Iraq, was captured in Balad, 75 kilometres north of Baghdad on Sunday. His captors had threatened to behead him. President Musharraf has felicitated the nation and the family members of Amjad Hafeez. Talking to GEO TV channels, he said the release of Amjad Hafeez is a very pleasant news for the Pakistani nation. President Musharraf also advised the captors of Amjad Hafeez that capturing and cold blooded murder of innocent people is against the teachings of Islam. "Our religion does not allow to commit such types of crimes against either the Muslims or non-Muslims," he said. He urged that innocent people should not be captured and assassinated brutally as these activities bring bad name to Islam. The president said Amjad Hafeez was an innocent man. He belongs to a poor family and was the only bread earner of his family. Information Minister Sheikh Rashid said that President Musharraf had taken personal interest in the case and the government had been making hectic efforts through all available channels to secure Hafeez’s release. He said Pakistani diplomats played an important role in securing Hafeez’s release. Rashid told The Associated Press that Amjad Hafeez had contacted his family in Pakistan to tell them that he was safe, and already in Kuwait. "It is good news, and we welcome his release," the minister said. Hafeez was shown on Arabic television on Sunday surrounded by hooded gunmen who threatened to decapitate him in 72 hours unless local prisoners were released. He had travelled to the Gulf six years ago in search of work and after working in Kuwait for several years secured a job as a driver with US contractor Kellogg, Brown and Root.
Fresh bid to stop Pakistani's deportation
SAN FRANCISCO, July 2: American Muslim organizations have launched fresh efforts to stop the deportation of Ansar Mahmood, a Pakistani national and also a permanent US resident, after the US Immigration Bureau rejected his appeal last Tuesday. The organizations, including the American-Arab Anti- Discrimination Committee, the American Muslim Voice and Pakistan American Alliance, are urging the community and fellow Americans to contact the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director and urge him to reconsider the decision to deport Ansar Mahmood on humanitarian grounds. Mahmoud a 27-year-old permanent US resident, had been lawfully living and working in Hudson, New York. US officials took him into custody in October 2001, after he was caught photographing the Hudson River Reservoir.
US lauds Pakistan's anti-terror steps
WASHINGTON, July 2: The White House has said that Pakistan and America's other allies are making "great progress" in the fight against terrorism. "Pakistan has taken the fight to Al Qaeda," said White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan on Friday while referring to the ongoing military operation in South Waziristan. He divided US efforts to combat terrorism into two categories: the campaign to destroy the groups engaged in terrorist activities, and arrest their members and the programme for dismantling weapons of mass destruction. "You're seeing great progress in terms of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan recognizing the importance of confronting these threats," said Mr McClellan, adding that Saudi authorities were now going after leaders of Al Qaeda hiding there. Earlier, US Vice-President Dick Cheney also praised Pakistan's contribution in the fight against terror. "A strong radical Islamic movement had taken root in Pakistan, and was recruiting thousands for terrorist networks," said Mr Cheney, who blamed the previous US administration for "not engaging Pakistan's leaders or its military." Pakistan's support, he said, was "critical to any serious effort to shut down Al Qaeda's operations in Afghanistan." "The future direction of that country was in doubt, and the danger grew that Islamic extremists might take control of a nation armed with nuclear weapons," he said. The Bush administration, he said, "re-engaged with the government of President Musharraf, who has become a friend of the United States and provided support for our operations in Afghanistan." "With his help, we captured Khalid Shaykh Mohammad, the operational planner behind the 9/11 attacks, and we have destroyed much of Al Qaeda's senior leadership."
