KARACHI: The car of ATC-I Judge Rehmat Hussain Jaffery, hearing the plane conspiracy case against deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif and six others, was chased by a suspicious car at Sharea Faisal, here on Saturday. After ending the day's proceedings in the afternoon, Judge Rehmat Hussain Jaffery, escorted by a police mobile, was heading for his home when a car (Y-0306) started chasing the judge's car. In the jurisdiction of Tipu Sultan Police Station, the car tried to dodge the police van. However, the police personnel challenged the car riders at which they sped away. The police immediately aired the message in a bid to approach the car, but to no avail. A senior police official confirmed the incident on the condition of anonymity, but said that so far no formal complaint had been lodged.

Three shot dead

KARACHI: Three persons were killed in different incidents of violence on Saturday while an unidentified coach crushed another person to death.

Shah Nawaz, 25, was shot dead by two dacoits who barged into his house at Bhangora Goth. The dacoits barged into house No C-1332 of Bhangora Goth in the jurisdiction of Azizabad police station and tried to get hold of the family members. On resistance they resorted to firing which resulted in the death of Shah Nawaz and injured his uncle Amir Muhammad. While the dacoits were fleeing after a foiled dacoity attempt, one of them, Muhammad Aslam, was caught by the area residents who later handed him over to the police.

Unidentified persons shot dead Azherullah resident of house No 862 of Korangi 51-C Area while he was riding a motorbike with his friend Majeed, who luckily escaped unhurt. The body of Azherullah was later shifted to Jinnah Hospital. Majeed lodged FIR against the unidentified persons at the Korangi police station.

Unidentified bandits killed Nihal Haider, s/o Jalauddin, resident of Sector 9 in the jurisdiction of Khawaja Ajmer Nagri police station. Three dacoits intruded into the house of Nihal Haider in early Saturday morning while all the family members were asleep. On hearing a noise, Nihal Haider woke up and the dacoits in a state of panic, shot him dead and fled. FIR No 12/2000 has been registered against the unknown culprits.

A hit-and-run Safari coach killed an unidentified heroin addict aged between 50 to 55 at Shershah near Brooke Bond bus stop in the jurisdiction of Shershah police station. During the body search of the addict, who died on the spot, two packets of heroin were recovered. An FIR has been registered against the unknown coach driver.

JI disappointed at military govt's performance

KARACHI: Deputy chief of Jama'at-e-Islami (JI), Prof Ghafoor Ahmad has termed the first 100 days of the military rule as disappointing, suggesting to the Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf to review his agenda, team's performance and avoid prolonging his government's tenure. Addressing an Eid Milan party at New Karachi the other day, Prof Ghafoor apprehended that Gen Musharraf had no interest in resolving the grievances of the masses and the most important task for him was to pave the way for the signing of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. "Those who are included in the government are the representatives of the IMF and World Bank. The government has failed to come up to the expectations of the masses and it even failed to recover looted money of the exchequer," he added.

SUKKUR: Karachi-bound arms cargo seized
SUKKUR, Jan 22: Excise police conducted a raid on a Karachi-bound truck near Sakrand and recovered arms and ammunition on Saturday.

The truck (No. QA-6735) was coming from Peshawar and intercepted by the Excise team which had received a tip off about the arms movement along the route. During search of the vehicle, a big quantity of ammunition with a kalashnikov, a repeater gun and two pistols were found concealed under the other cargo. Three occupants of the truck, Mohammed Ali, Elahi Bukhsh and Mohammed Hussain - all Khosos by caste, were taken into custody.

MUET students boycott examinations

HYDERABAD: The Students Action Committee, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, has announced to boycott the 94-95 batch examinations, scheduled to begin from January 24. At a press conference, jointly addressed by the office-bearers of the action committee, Khalid Meerani, Akber Khoso, Faisal Arain, Waris Daheri and others said the administration of the MUET, headed by Vice Chancellor Abdul Rehman Memon, is involved in large-scale corruption. They said the administration is not ready to pay heed to the genuine problems of the students and it is using delaying tactics. The procedure of 75 per cent attendance has plunged the future of 200 students into darkness, while more than 250 students might be the victims of same policy, they said. They demanded the removal of Students Welfare Officer (SWO), an end to the involvement of forces in MUET affairs, maximum facilities for the students living in hostels and otherwise. They said the boycott would continue till the acceptance of their demands.

Girl complains of police excesses

KHAIRPUR: A girl student of Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur, Nusrat Bano Seheto has alleged that some policemen entered her house and looted cash and valuables. She said the police "trampled social and human values". Bano said she has filed a petition with special judge Anti Corruption Sukkur against 15 policemen including Kadir Bux, Mashoque and others of Hinjorija police who had booked her brother in a 13 D Arms case. She said her brother was innocent and police was victimising her family members. She asked the authorities to provide justice to her otherwise she would observe hunger strike against the atrocities of police.
